Venice has made history by implementing a groundbreaking initiative: the introduction of a €5 tourist fee specifically aimed at day-trippers. This innovative regulation dictates that individuals visiting the city between the hours of 8:00 am and 4:00 pm must pay the fee, while overnight guests will find it conveniently included in their hotel charges.

While it may sound peculiar, the introduction of this fee serves a crucial purpose: addressing the pressing challenge of overtourism in Venice. The city’s tourist bed count exceeded its resident population last year, underscoring the severity of the issue. With an annual influx of over 20 million tourists and peak days seeing upwards of 40,000 day-trippers, Venice is taking proactive measures to manage its visitor numbers.

While the efforts seem noble, citizens say otherwise.

Local residents argue that implementing the tourist fee will not deter visitors. Some express skepticism that the fee, equivalent to roughly Rs 450 for an Indian traveler, will have any significant impact on tourist numbers.

Some locals felt that Venice was being considered a museum or theme park as a few hundred protesters held banners reading “No to ticket for Vene-Land” and chanting “Here we live and here we stay” and marched to one of Venice’s main squares!
